Choosing the wrong brush can lead to cross-contamination, reduced efficiency and issues during hygiene audits.

In the food industry, selecting the right cleaning brush is far from a minor detail. Recently, we conducted a technical training session together with Igeax, a manufacturer specialized in brushes for the food industry. During the session, we reviewed key criteria such as colour coding, different fibre stiffness levels, and how to select the most suitable brush depending on the surface, level of dirt, and area of application.

The training reinforced a key idea: food safety starts with the right tools.

Why are food hygiene brushes different?

Food hygiene brushes are designed for demanding environments, going beyond standard cleaning requirements. In addition to effective cleaning, they must help prevent operational errors and support hygiene protocols.

They feature colour coding, a practical system used to differentiate areas and support HACCP systems in environments where cross-contamination is a risk. In Spain, organizations such as AESAN highlight the importance del HACCP as the foundation of self-control systems in the food industry.

What should a professional food-grade brush offer?

Not all brushes meet the requirements of these environments. A professional brush should provide:

  • Food-grade materials that do not transfer substances or promote bacterial growth
  • High thermal resistance, allowing disinfection in autoclaves (up to 121°C)
  • Reliable performance in cold environments, suitable for cold storage (down to -20°C)
  • Chemical resistance, compatible with common detergents and disinfectants
  • Hygienic and ergonomic design to facilitate use and prevent residue build-up

Colour coding, ergonomics and fibre stiffness

Choosing the right brush means considering the environment and its specific use:

  • Medium fibres: for general cleaning
  • Hard fibres: for more stubborn dirt
  • Specific formats: for hard-to-reach areas or complex geometries

The combined use of these three fibre types helps optimise cleaning, reduce working time and improve process standardisation.

In addition, some products such as the Detectable Medium Hand Brush and the Detectable Long Hand Brush  are also available in metal-detectable versions, which is particularly valuable in certain food production processes.

Professional training for better results

The training with Igeax reinforced a key message: cleaning efficiency depends on the right product selection. Using professional food-grade brushes adapted to each area improves hygiene, streamlines workflow organisation and enhances process safety.
